What is a photographic triptych? At its simplest it is 3 separate photographs (or one photograph split into 3 parts) displayed together. Members had spent the last month or so creating examples and we spent a fun evening displaying and sharing our creations last night. It was great to see so many members get involved and we were treated to wide variety of triptych photographs which you can enjoy below. If this type of activity appeals to you and you want to know more about our club feel free to contact us at committee@cardiffcameraclub.co.uk.
Our monthly league competition rolled on with the February contest judged by Barbie Lindsay MPAGB, FBPE, EFIAP/s, AWPF.
We had a high level of participation with 58 Entries from 17 members including 3 of our newest members. A wide range of styles and genres were represented with some members having fun experimenting with their photography. There were many interesting photographs on show but for Barbie 4 photographs shared the top three spots:
1st – “Hanging out to dry” by Chris Chinnick 2nd – “The Boxer” by Cara Sutton 3rd – “Dartmoor Sunset” by Stephen Willcocks & “Floxglove” by Niall
It looks like Chris may be back to winning ways – well done Chris. David Barton didn’t make the top three on this occasion but still hangs onto the overall lead.
The “Ace of clubs” is an annual competition hosted by the WPF. It normally takes place face to face but this was not possible this year due to social restrictions associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. The competition was held over a video conference service instead with over 100 spectators. The multi-round interactive selection format of the standard competition was abandoned for a simple contest with each of the 13 participating clubs contributing 30 photographs. The scoring followed the normal format with three judges assessing the photographs blind (unseen until competition) awarding scores between 2 & 5 points (maximum total score 15).
The photographs submitted to the competition were of a very high standard with a great impact. In this company Cardiff managed 10th place. The full results are below:

Thanks to all our members who represented the club this year. The individual photograph scores are below:
After a break for Christmas & New year the clubs monthly league competition has returned. We kicked off 2021 with an open digital competition judged by Jane Lines LRPS, MPAGB & BPE5.
It was great to see our new members getting stuck in – welcome aboard Richard Payton. Despite our restricted lives we were treated to a varied and interesting selection of photographs. There were many quality photographs on show but on the night the top three photographs for Jane were:
1st – “Wild rabbit” by Dave Barton 2nd – “Pierhead building” by Niall 3rd – “Gothic symmetry” by David Barton
It was a cracking night from David Barton with his photographs being placed 1st and 3rd and he is now topping the Photograph of the year leader board – well done Dave.
As with so much of life the current social restrictions have meant changes to the WPF Memorial Trophies contests. So, this year, we had two simple digital contests (monochrome & colour) scored by a single judge. Our Judge for this year was Eddy Lane ARPS DPAGB EFIAP. The contest was held yesterday (17th January 2021) over Zoom with 21 clubs participating.
Monochrome contest
Cardiff put in a strong showing in the monochrome contest. Our photographs scored constantly highly and we enjoyed joint 3 place overall. The details of our scores are below

Our battle with Locksheath & Sarisbury took place this week. This is a new competition for the club, this being the second year that it has run. Last year it was a very close contest and this year was expected to be no different. The contest takes place over 2 legs, home & away. The same set of photographs are presented at each leg but scored by different judges. Our Judges this year were:
Roy Lambeth APAGB DPAGB, AFIAP, BPE2* at Locksheath & Sarisbury Gareth Martin AWPF, CPAGB at Cardiff
Locksheath & Sarisbury were first to host and the contest was indeed very tight with Cardiff a whisker ahead by a slender 3 points at the close of play. It was all to play for on home turf. At half time it was still pretty tight with Cardiff only able to extend their advantage to a measly 6 points. However, in the second half things took a decisive turn and Cardiff ran out comfortable winners. The final scores were:

We took part in the Afan Nedd 11-way last Wednesday (9th December 2020). This battle, organised by Afan Nedd camera club, would normally be a print competition but this year it was changed to a digital format to allow social distancing. The event itself was hosted over a video conference service – not ideal, but it did allow clubs from further afield to participate and we had 4 English clubs join the usual Welsh contingent.
Cardiff put in a competent performance and were placed equal 6th with Tenby just one point behind Swansea. Melbourn were clear winners with a fine (and very enjoyable) selection of photographs – well done Melbourn.
The second round of Photographer of the Year took place yesterday (26th November 2020). This open competion typified the varied work our members produce and it was great to see seasoned & new members sharing their photographs. Our judge on the evening was Erica Oram CPAGB AFIAP BPE3 who provided a thoughtful commentary on our work – many thanks Erica. The top three photographs were:
1st – “Coal tit” by Andre Van de Sande 2nd – “Tennis trophy” by Trevor Waller 3rd – “Kestrel landing” by Niall
Congratulation to our members Cara Sutton, Dave Russell, Anne Phillips & Pete Rankin for having their photographs accepted into the Welsh Photographic Federation Lockdown exhibition. Our members’ acceptances can seen below or hop on over to < http://thewpf.co.uk/2020lockdowngallery > to see the full gallery.
Cardiff took part in the Bridgend 5-way battle against Baglan Bay, Bridgend, Rhondda & Swansea last night (9th November 2020). Due to the pandemic this annual competition was digital (rather than the normal print) and took place as a video conference. The judge for the evening was Carol McNiven Young FRPS EFIAP DPE4* CPAGB
As always it was a hard fought contest with some very high quality photographs on show. We were never in contention for first place but had quite a tussle with Bridgend for second place. At half time we were just a single point behind Bridgend (in third). In the second half and with 2 photographs to go we were now in second place with a 3 point lead over Bridgend. Unfortunately for us, Bridgend finished incredibly strongly scoring maximum points for their 2 final photographs. So, in the end, we finished in third place just one point behind. The final positions and scores are shown below:
Our photographs were made by Chris Chinnick, Jeff Howe, Trevor Waller, Andre Van de Sande & Dave Russell. Special mention goes to Trevor Waller who achieved a commended award for his image “The basketball player”. The individual scores for our entries are shown below.
