The committee was thinking about the programme in these transitional times from lockdown, and decided we are ‘Zoomed Out’! And in June, the weather is good, isn’t it? So we thought we would have a social picnic and maybe take a few photos. Just the fun of meeting up and maybe some would adjourn to the pub afterwards? But the BBC forewarned us of Thunderstorms and rain – so we cancelled the picnic – and then updated forecast to better weather! So some of us met anyway and had a good chat. As some wandered off in pairs it is hard to know yet what photos were taken overall; and Andre, ever the nature photographer vanished! I guess a show and tell, plus our Facebook page will show a couple of images… Oh and it was fun using photography to meet a Kurdistani chap who insisted his ancestors came from indigenous USA Indians, he with the white feather in his hat…

Following a bit of a mix up (by me!) we had to change our programme at the very last minute. A few intrepid souls managed to change plans and we met up at Llandaff Cathedral – mostly just for the pleasure of meeting after such a long time locked out of the club room, with of course a little photography thrown in for good measure!

The few snaps below will show the general tenor of the evening. Keen observers will note that Dave copied the absent Jeff after I mentioned a particular low level shot thru roots that the latter had taken a couple of weeks ago; and he also followed Dean in much use of the Glass Ball!! It just shows how club life shares ideas…😁 And of course I had fun photographing him doing it…

The weather held up beautifully and at some point we shall have a showing at club to see what the others produced. For some of us the evening concluded with a nice drink at the local pub; although I must mention with some amusement that Sue would like to have it known she was drinking coffee.

It was simply a pleasant get together!

The May round of the Photographer of the year league contest took place recently, judged by Darren Pullman CPAGB BPE2* EFIAP

Despite the difficulties the coronavirus has created we had a varied and interesting collection of photographs to enjoy in this months competition. Great examples of nature and minimalism (to name just 2 genres tackled) were included. However, on the night Darren picked out these photographs as his top three:

1^st – “The drummer” by Dave Russell
2^nd – “Commitment” by Niall
3^rd – “The mushroom family” by Jeff Howe

Well done to Dave for his 1^st place with a very dynamic photograph. Not in the top 3 but Andre Van de Sande deserves special mention for the consistently high score his photographs achieved with 3 out of 4 making the held section.

The Tri-city competition with South London Photographic Society & Bon Accord Camera Club (Aberdeen) is a relatively new competition for the club but it is establishing itself as a way to enjoy the photography from across the UK. This year was a little different from previous events as it was held in realtime with members from all the clubs attending – thanks to the ubiquity of video conferencing services these days. Thanks to South London for organising & hosting this year.

We had a fun evening with plenty of chat and a great display of photography. Our judge for the evening was Clive Tanner MPAGB, FRPS, APAGB who provided thoughtful comment on all the photographs. Bon Accord ran out comfortable winners with an impressive display of quality photography – all four of the commendations were awarded to Bon Accord photographs. This left Cardiff and South London in a tight tussle with only a half point difference in the final reckoning. Unfortunately we were placed in 3rd place behind South London. The Final scores were:

Cardiff Camera Club had its annual battle (competition) with Rhiwbina Camera Club yesterday (7^th May 2021). Many thanks to Rhiwbina for hosting this year, we look forward to hosting next year and hope that we will be able to meet in person by then. Our judge for the evening was Ed Cloutman, EFIAP, Hon. FWPF who provided thoughtful and lively comments on the competition photographs. Thanks to Ed & Rhiwbina for an enjoyable evening.

Cardiff did very well and the photographs from our members were generally well liked by Ed. As a result Cardiff ran out comfortable winners with 352 points to Rhiwbina’s 327.

Congratulations to Cardiff members Trevor Waller (for Vigil), Necia Rogers (for Tenderness of a mother), Andre Van de Sande (for Self portrait) & Chris Chinnick (for The bay at eight) whose photographs all achieved maximum marks.

The April round of the Photographer of the year league contest took place recently, judged by accomplished wildlife photographer Robin Claydon ARPS DPAGB BPE3*.

The members submitted another strong selection of photographs with many scoring well. However, as with all competitions, a top three have to be attributed and on this occasion these were:

1st – “Competition” by Niall
2nd – “A Light in The Darkness” by Trevor Waller
3rd – “Poppy Sue” by Chris Chinnick

Chris Chinnick had a particularly strong showing with two of his photographs (“Poppy Sue” & “Pistyll Cain Waterfall (North Wales)”) receiving maximum marks and a third place. Congratulations to Trevor Waller for his lovely photograph “A Light in The Darkness”. It was nice to see Amanda Golton stepping into the fray with her first entries for this season.

Last night (1^st April 2021) we enjoyed a lively Zoom meeting discussing and showing our panels. We had expanded on the work produced for our recent triptych evening to create panels of 5 photographs which we shared and discussed. The night provoked a great variety of discussion and it was great to get an insight into each others creative process as well as many helpful (possibly) hints and tricks. Thanks to everybody who created a panel – the fruits of your labours are shown below.

Building on last years success at the WPF Welsh Salon our club members achieved even more acceptances than last year. First time acceptances were achieved by Cara Sutton, Dave Barton & Necia Rodgers – well done all. Dave Russell picked up an acceptance for “Lone Tree” – great work Dave. Our most successful member by far was Andre Van de Sande with 5 acceptances and the Gordon Jenkins award for “Black Headed Gull” – a truly exceptional haul.

Our Judge for the evening Mike Barnard LRPS, ABPPA, BPE2 (based in Yorkshire) picked these photographs as his top three on the night:

2^nd – “A helping hand” by Jeff Howe
3^rd – “Something old” by Niall

With Andre taking the top spot with his selfie this month it is all change at the top of the league.
